I need to resolve a starter motor issue, I fitted a Kent flywheel to my engine as the Pinto was from an automatic car, so didn't have one. I was sure the two ring gears were the same so I could continue with the Pinto starter, which was also missing. Is this the case? Any alternatives as 2l Ford engines and spares are becoming scarce in this part of the world?

Kent engine ff1600s use classic mini inertia starters, as the flywheel and hewland adapter is the same this should then fit your pinto.

Thanks Mark, Kent starters much easier to source, just have to check I have clearance at the chassis there, it's quite a busy area!

Yes I agree with Steven on this.

I had an incident where a "Brand New" race starter from a "Recognised supplier" that was supposed to be a straight replacement for the original one broke the ring gear on my engine.

This had Very expensive consequences. I do not live on the UK mainland.

I know it is a bit pricey but it starts the car all weekend on a 21 ah battery. It will start the engine even if the engine is stinking hot and you have just spun off. Money very well spent in my book.

I couldn't agree more about buying a decent starter motor. When I did up the Royale, I fitted a brand new Lucas starter motor and the engine would barely turn over, and that was with a brand new battery, wiring etc. We struggled for hours trying to find a short circuit then Uncle Ken said fit a Wasp unit. We did that and there was no further problem. The standard starter motors just aren't up to the job in our cars. It's expensive but you'll never regret it.

Just to elaborate on why I had the problem, my Pinto didn't have a flywheel as it was from an auto. I adapted a kent flywheel to suit, had it re-centred and balanced as an assembly and then forgot about it until the engine was in the car! The pinto has 132 teeth of a quite fine pitch, the kent (as manufactured in South Africa) has 106 quite coarse pitch but not a lot of difference in the diameter. The pinto starter came nowhere close and the inertia starter with a 10 tooth bendix from a kent just kissed the teeth of the ring gear and because of the size of the body it was not possible to slot the holes and slide the motor across. Fortunately the owner of our local spares shop loves his motor racing and loaned me a dozen or so of his smallest starter motors once I explained the problem, the solution was a Toyota 1BZ reduction starter with a 9 tooth pinion fitted as per the photo, so far works fine!
