Question about seams. Our kitchen has an L shaped run with an island, and the fabricator we talked to mentioned we'd have at least two seams because of slab size. He kind of waved it off as no big deal, but a friend of mine has a seam in her counter that you can feel with your hand and see from across the room. How much of this is material and how much is workmanship, and is there anything I should be asking for upfront? The island is the piece I care most about since it's the first thing you see walking in, and a bad joint right across it would bother me every single day.

Almost all of it is workmanship and layout planning. Slab size sets how many seams you need, but where they land and how they're finished is a decision someone makes. Ask to approve the seam placement on a layout drawing before fabrication, and ask whether they template digitally, because that's where tight joints come from. A good seam is visible if you look but shouldn't be something you feel. We had Quartz Countertops in Charleston, South Carolina installed by Perfect Stones and they walked us through the layout first. Also, pattern matching across a seam costs a bit of extra material, so ask whether that's included.
